Sweating occurs in the body when there is heat in an area or environment. It is the body’s natural response to heat – whereby water is being released through the sweat glands which in turn cool down the body (help to regulate the body).
There are many people who have a disorder called hyperhidrosis (that is, sweating excessively in the armpits, palms, and soles of the feet), and this causes a lot of unhappiness. People with this disorder sweat on one or two areas of their bodies which can interfere with their everyday activities. And, this is common in hot and humid environments.
While some of these people don’t bother to take proper care in order to manage this issue, others simply don’t know how to stop sweating excessively.
There are two major causes of excessive sweating:
- Primary (natural) Hyperhidrosis – excessive sweating that has no underlying medical cause. It occurs when the nerves that are responsible for triggering sweat glands become overactive and there’s more perspiration than should be.
These natural causes are usually attributed to hereditary (family) genes.
- Secondary (medical) Hyperhidrosis – the medical causes are usually as a result of a medical condition the individual has. These medical conditions include diabetes, low blood sugar, fever, malaria, heart attacks, thyroid problems, menopause hot flashes, infections, obesity, stress, nervous system disorders among others.

USE OF ANTIPERSPIRANTS:
Antiperspirants are deodorants formulated essentially to stop sweating. They are usually applied to the underarms (armpits). The best time to apply it is after bathing in the morning and at night, before bed. This is because it takes time for the effect of the antiperspirant to kick in, but when they do, they stop the sweat glands from producing sweat, hence allowing one to have a sweat-free night
WEAR LIGHT FABRICS:
Light fabric clothing especially cotton wears help to reflect the sun’s rays rather than absorb and store the heat, which is what heavy fabric does.
EAT THE RIGHT FOOD:
Believe it or not, there are certain foods you eat that accelerate the rate at which you sweat. Spicy foods are a no-no if you want to stop excessive sweating. This is because they generate heat in the body when consumed. Caffeine should also be avoided as it stimulates the adrenal glands and causes the armpits, palms, and feet to sweat.
If you have a medical condition, see a doctor for proper evaluation and prescription of treatment. This is because a person who has diabetes, for example, is not expected to take cold drinks that have high sugar content.
It’s a good idea to stay cool, and by this, we don’t mean being trendy or wearing the latest of outfits (lol) though that doesn’t hurt anyone. What we mean is that you should utilize things that will help keep the body in a cool state. Some of these things include air-conditioned homes, staying in shades, using blinds and curtains to reduce the amount of heat entering the home, eating smaller meal portions, drinking lots of water to stay hydrated, etc. Keeping the body internally and externally cool goes a long way in reducing excessive sweating.
If you have tried all of the above-mentioned tips and they didn’t work for you, there’s always the option of medical treatment, though this should be a last resort. Various medical treatments include prescription antiperspirants, antidepressants (anxiety can cause excessive sweating), oral medication, botox injections, and surgery. Note that surgery is an option only when the doctor confirms that the case is a critical one.
